Preparing soil for garlic: the weeks before fall planting

Short answer: in the weeks before fall planting, get a current soil test, correct fertility to what it says, work in organic matter well ahead of the planting date, deal with any spot that ponds, and form your beds early enough for them to settle. Several of those jobs — changing pH, building organic matter, fixing drainage — work slowly, so the real starting point is the season before, not September.

Garlic sits in the same ground for eight to nine months, through a winter and a spring you do not control. What you do to the soil beforehand is the only direct say you get over the conditions it grows in. Where soil prep sits in the wider fall calendar is in the Ontario planting timeline.

Soil test first, everything else second

Every fertility decision on this page depends on a number you do not have until the lab sends it back. That is why we will not print a fertiliser rate here. A rate that suits a sandy loam in Grey County can be wrong for a clay loam in Essex, and too much of some nutrients does as much harm as too little: excess nitrogen in the fall pushes soft top growth into winter, and an over-fertilised seedbed can injure new roots.

Take the sample properly. That means a composite of many cores taken across the field at a consistent depth, separate samples for areas you already know are different, and a note that the crop is garlic. If the lab has no garlic-specific recommendation, or the report is unclear, take it to OMAFA (Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness) or your provincial or state vegetable specialist.

The principles that do hold broadly:

  • Phosphorus and potassium go on before planting, according to the test, because they are hard to get into the root zone once the crop is in the ground.
  • Nitrogen is mostly a spring job. Garlic sizes its bulb from leaves made in spring, so that is when nitrogen needs to be available. How much, if any, belongs in the fall depends on your soil and on what the previous crop left behind.
  • pH in the slightly acidic to neutral range suits garlic. If your test says you are well outside it, correct it on your specialist’s advice and expect it to take time.

Organic matter

Garlic wants a loose, crumbly soil that holds moisture without staying waterlogged, and organic matter is how most growers get there.

Cover crops grown the season before are the cheapest source. Grasses and cereals build structure and compete with weeds; legumes add nitrogen. Choose with your rotation in mind, because some cover crops host garlic pests — covered in garlic crop rotation.

Compost is the steady option. Incorporate it a few weeks before planting, not on the day and not dropped into the furrow.

Manure needs more care. Fresh manure can be high in salts and ammonia, carries weed seed, and brings food-safety waiting periods before a harvested crop can be sold. Aged or composted manure applied well ahead is the safer route, and your specialist can tell you which intervals apply where you farm.

Drainage: where garlic is actually lost

Ask growers how they lost a garlic crop and the answer is rarely cold. It is water: a low corner that sat saturated through a March thaw, and bulbs that rotted or never rooted.

Walk the field after a heavy rain before you commit it to garlic. Anywhere water stands for more than a short while is a place not to plant, or a place to fix first.

The fixes, roughly in order of cost:

  1. Do not plant the wet spot. Free, and on a small farm often the right answer.
  2. Break compaction with a subsoiler when the soil is dry enough to shatter rather than smear.
  3. Form raised or hilled beds to lift the root zone above standing water. If you plan to plant or harvest by machine, read the section on beds and equipment below first.
  4. Tile drainage. The permanent answer, and a capital project rather than a September job.

Heavy clay magnifies all of this. It holds water, compacts easily, and is the soil where working ground too wet does the most lasting damage. If yours is clay, drainage is the first problem to solve, not the last.

Forming beds

Beds, flat or raised, set the geometry the crop grows in for the next nine months.

  • Form them early enough to settle. A freshly thrown, fluffy bed slumps with the first rains and leaves cloves at uneven depth. A week or two of settling, or a light roll, helps.
  • Kill the first weed flush before planting. Early beds give you a stale-seedbed opportunity: let the surface weeds germinate, then remove them shallowly just before planting. The method is in weed control in garlic.
  • Keep bed width consistent. Every tool that will pass over the field later needs a repeatable bed width and wheel track. Measure your tractor before you settle it.
  • Do not work wet soil. Shaping beds in wet ground smears the soil and builds compaction that lasts well into next year.

Beds and our machines

This is the part we want to be careful about.

The PL-22 is configured to your row spacing and bed width before it ships. Row-to-row spacing can be adjusted afterwards; in-row spacing is set by the planting wheels and cannot. So settle your bed layout before you order, not after.

What we have not yet published is whether the PL-22 suits raised beds, or what soil conditions it needs. Those are open questions on our side, and nothing on this page should be read as a yes. The same goes for harvest. The UC-36 and UC-48 undercutters need at least 40 HP and run 6 to 8 inches below the bulb, but we have not published how they perform in heavy clay. Ask before you assume.

When this does not apply

  • You are planting next week. Most of the slow jobs above are for next year. This fall: test, avoid the wet ground, and do not work soil when it is wet.
  • The field has a history of allium disease. No amount of soil preparation fixes a field carrying white rot or bloat nematode. That is a rotation and seed problem, not a soil-prep one.
  • Garden scale. Compost, a fork and a well-drained spot cover most of this for a single bed.
  • Other climates. The timing assumes an Ontario or northern-US fall planting. Warmer regions plant later and often face different soil constraints.
