Crop compatibility

Beyond garlic

The PL-22 was designed for garlic, and garlic is what it does best. But the mechanism suits most crops planted from a clove, set, tuber or large seed — and growers have put it to work on a good few of them.

What we’ve actually seen it plant

Everything on this list is a crop we or a customer have genuinely planted with the machine. We don’t list crops we’ve only heard about.

  • Garlic What the machine was designed for.
  • Tulips Bulbs, planted the same way as garlic.
  • Potatoes Needs an adaptation to the machine — talk to us before you order.
  • Ginseng
  • Hops
  • Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Turmeric
  • Onions We build a dedicated onion planting wheel.

Why the list isn’t longer

A planter that “handles most root crops” is an easy thing to write and a hard thing to stand behind. A grower who buys on a claim that turns out to be approximate has a machine that doesn’t do the job and a season they can’t get back — which is a much worse outcome for everyone than a sale we didn’t make.

There are crops we suspect the machine would handle well — shallots among them — but we haven’t run them ourselves and no customer has reported back. If you’re planting one of those and want to talk it through, call us. We’ll tell you what we know and what we’re guessing at, and we’ll be clear about which is which.

If you’ve planted something unusual with a Velocity or Garlic-EEZ machine, we’d genuinely like to hear about it — doug@velocityfarmequipment.com.

What actually changes between crops

The variables are in-row spacing, row spacing and seed depth — all of which are set when we configure the machine for your beds. Seed potatoes go in further apart than garlic; cucumbers and pumpkins further apart again.

Tell us which crops you want to plant and at what spacing when you ask for a quote, and we will tell you whether one machine can cover all of them or whether you’re better off setting it up for the crop that matters most.
