Garlic crop rotation: what to grow between and how long to wait
Short answer: keep a field out of every allium — garlic, onions, leeks, shallots, chives — for several years between garlic crops. Three to four years is the usual rule of thumb for general disease pressure. Where bloat nematode has been found, longer is better, and the right length depends on a lab count rather than a rule. Rotate into crops that do not host the problems you have, keep the break free of allium volunteers, and accept that rotation manages some diseases and cures none of them once they are established.
Garlic’s most damaging problems either live in the soil or survive in it, and they share the allium family as hosts. Planting garlic after garlic, or after onions, concentrates them in the one field you are relying on. Rotation is the cheapest control you have, and the one most often cut short when ground is tight.
What rotation protects you from

How long between allium crops

Count from the last allium crop, not the last garlic crop. Onions or leeks in year two of a four-year break mean the clock restarted in year two.
For Ontario growers, OMAFA (Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness) is the place to confirm rotation length for a specific disease. Elsewhere, your provincial or state vegetable specialist. A rotation length is exactly the kind of number that should come from someone who has seen your lab report.
The break has to be a real break
Most failed rotations fail here, not in the plan.
Other alliums count. Onions, leeks, shallots, chives and ornamental alliums all host the same problems. If you also grow onion sets, those belong in the allium years, not in the break.
Volunteers count. Bulbs and cloves left in the ground at harvest come up next spring and keep a host in the field through the year it was supposed to be resting. A common source is plants that snapped at the neck when pulled, leaving the bulb behind. Loosening the bed before lifting means more plants come out whole, which is one of the reasons to undercut rather than pull — covered in undercutting at harvest. It reduces what stays behind; it does not eliminate it. Walk the field the following spring and pull any garlic you find.
Bulbils count. Scapes left to mature drop bulbils, and those can grow into allium plants in the years the field was meant to be clear.
Weeds count. Wild garlic and wild onion are alliums. Bloat nematode also has weed hosts, so a weedy break crop can undo a long rotation.
What to rotate with
There is no universally correct partner crop, because the question is what hosts the problem on your farm. The principles:

The column that matters is the last one. “Not an allium” is not the same as “not a host”. Ask your specialist, with your lab result, which break crops suit the problem you actually have.
Garlic harvest in July leaves the field open in late summer, which is a good window to establish a cover crop. Plan that window when you plan the rotation, rather than leaving the ground bare until the next spring.
An illustrative four-year sequence
This is an example of the shape, not a recommendation for your farm: garlic planted in the fall and lifted the next July, followed by a cover crop; a vegetable from another family the following year; a year of grass or legume cover; another non-allium crop; then garlic back in that fall. Substitute crops whose host status you have checked.
Where the planter comes into it
Only at the edges. The PL-22 plants several crops that could sit in a rotation — squash, cucumbers, and potatoes with an adaptation to the machine that you should talk to us about first. It also plants onion sets with a dedicated wheel, and those are alliums. Whether any of these is a sensible rotation partner is an agronomy question, not an equipment one. Equipment matters in one other way: soil moves on it. Work clean fields before suspect ones, and knock the soil off the planter and the undercutter between blocks.
When rotation does not help
- Infested seed. A perfect rotation planted with infested seed puts the problem straight back into clean ground. Seed sourcing comes first — see choosing seed garlic.
- White rot. Rotation keeps clean fields clean. It does not rescue an infested one on any timescale a farm can plan around.
- Small plots side by side. Rotating between beds a few metres apart moves the crop less than it seems, because soil moves on boots and tools. It is still better than no rotation.
- Rented or new ground. You may not know what grew there. Ask the landowner about alliums in past years, and test before you plant.
